Title: UMRS Boat Access Points - Pool 7 and 8 maps
Description:
Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created a series of maps for Mississippi River Navigation Pools 7 and 8 that show where the various boat landings and access points are located.
Purpose:
The boat access maps were developed as a center resource, to aid UMESC staff locate the various sites the Center’s field crews use to access the river. Copies of the maps are kept with the Center’s float plan itineraries as a reference source, and are used to help locate and standardize the location names used in the itineraries.

Citation Information:
Originator:
It is believed that the creation of this data set might have begun in the early 1980’s, to support a habitat inventory project of the Upper Mississippi River System. Over the years several federal, state, and private organizations have added to and edited the data set, though the original creator and the project for which this data set was developed is unknown.

Title: Boat Access Points
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: map
Other Citation Details: This data set was last edited in the late 1990’s, to support a habitat inventory and evaluation project for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Source Time Period of Content:
Source Contribution: The boat access point database was used to mark and label the various boat ramps, canoe launches, and fisherman walk-in access points.
Process Step:
Process Description: The streetmap DVD and 2000 land/water boundary data were used to create georeferenced images of the areas around the available boat access points.
Process Date: 20041222
Process Step:
Process Description: Maps were then prepared by overlaying the local road maps on top of regional topographic quadrangles, overlaid with the boat access point data.
Process Step:
Process Description: The map data were saved as a series of encapsulated post script files. These files were then used to create .jpg images and a .pdf file of the individual map tiles.
