- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The 1:24,000-scale (24K) U.S. Geological Survey
(USGS) quadrangle boundary data set contains the
following information. (1) The approximate
boundaries of the various 24K USGS quadrangles.
(2) The names and indexing codes associated with
each 24K quadrangle. And (3) information on which
1:100,000- (100K) and 1:250,000-scale (250K)
quadrangle each 24K is associated with.
- Purpose:
-
The data set was created to assist UMESC employees
with locating the names and indexing information
associated with each 24K quadrangle, and their
approximate boundaries.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
The quadrangle boundaries are approximate.
Quadrangles associated with the outer U.S.
boundaries (e.g., those along the shores of the
Great Lakes, oceanic coasts, or the boarders with
Canada and Mexico), may have been extended to
include areas that were considered too small to
create individual quadrangles for. No attempt was
made to locate each of these odd sized quadrangles
and accurately represent their boundaries in this
data set. Furthermore, considering the size of
the database, no attempt was made to densify (add
locational detail) to the lines that define the
boundaries of the quadrangles. Only the corner
points are linked to specific coordinates on the
earth's surface. Therefore, if these data are
reprojected, instead of curving boundary lines
that follow the projected surface, straight lines
will be drawn between the corner coordinates.
These data are stored in decimal degree
coordinates, North American Datum 1927 (NAD27).

-
The names, states in which the quadrangles are
located, and Grid60 information were all obtained
from a quadrangle center point coverage provided
by an individual who works for the USGS national
mapping division. Background information on the
2- and 3-digit codes used to identify 250K- and
100K-quadrangles came from another USGS FTP
server, several years later. These data were
added to the 24K grid by linking the data sets
together using ArcInfo commands.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
The polygon features were created using the
ArcInfo Generate command, fishnet option. Most of
the attribute information were added from
quadrangle center point themes using ArcInfo's
identify and linking functions. Only those
polygons attributed by these themes were retained,
all other cells in the fishnet were eliminated.
- Completeness_Report:
-
Only those polygons which corresponded to
quadrangles identified in the 24K quad center
point coverage were retained. The boundaries of
the coastline quadrangles (i.e., Great Lakes
shorelines, ocean coasts, Canadian and Mexican
boundaries) were not researched to determine which
quadrangles had their boundaries extended to
include land areas too small to map as individual
quadrangles. Also in an effort to reduce overall
file size, the arc lines used to define the
boundaries of the quadrangles were not densified
(to add additional georeferencing points).
Therefore if the data are reprojected, straight
lines will be drawn between the quadrangle corner
nodes instead of curved lines that follow the
projection surface.

- Process_Description:
-
The software program ArcInfo was used to create a
fishnet using the Generate command. The input
coordinates were provided in decimal degrees, with
the starting point defined as a whole number
latitude and longitude value, with between degree
intervals that corresponded to 7.5 minute
quadrangles (i.e., 1/8th of a degree).

- Process_Description:
-
A central point coverage containing attribute
information for USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles was
used to attribute the fishnet.

Additional attribute information related to the 3
digit codes used by USGS to identify 100K
quadrangles were added to the database from another
dataset downloaded from the national mapping division.
