Archived great blue heron eggs originally collected in 1993 were analyzed for two classes of new and emerging contaminants.  Whereas  the perfluorochemicals were slightly elevated as expected near large urban centers ,the polybrominated diphenyl ethers were elevated to the point where adverse effects have been found in other avian species.
